Osteopathy and Headaches
|
One of the common questions we get is can Osteopathy help with headaches, the answer being YES WE CAN HELP!! Headaches affect us all differently from occasional mild pain or tension to incapacitating chronic migraines. There are also many different causes of headaches: stress, neck and shoulder tightness, sinus problems, diet, hormonal, dehydration but sometimes headaches can occur due to more serious causes. The role of the osteopath is to firstly diagnose the cause of your headaches and secondly treat and manage your headaches.
During your osteopathic consultation a complete medical history will be taken along with a physical exam helping to determine the cause of your headaches. An osteopathic treatment follows which includes a wide range of techniques, including soft tissue and stretching, gentle joint articulation and localized manipulation, ligament and fascial release techniques. Some people find osteopathic treatment can eliminate their headaches and others find that it reduces the frequency and the severity of the headache. An osteopathic consultation doesn’t finish once you leave the treatment room, we will often be able to provide you with home based exercises, dietary, postural or ergonomic advice to help you manage and reduce the likelihood of your headaches re-occurring.

Improve your posture through Exercise
|
Resistance training is essential for strengthening your bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Preventing arthritis, osteoporosis as well as decreasing the risk of diabetes and other lifestyle based diseases. One thing people do not often associate resistance training with is improving and strengthen your posture. If you have weak posture a correct resistance training program can address these weaknesses.
How do you know if you are on the correct type of program? Your personal trainer or gym instructor should have carried out a postural assessment. This would allow them to develop the correct program for your posture. Lets assess your program; count the number of exercises you push the weight away verses the number of exercises you pull the weight towards you. For example Push ups push away while lat pull down pulls towards you. For 95% of the population you need to do more pull then push. If your program is not set up this way you may need to get your program assessed by someone who is qualified and understand postural assessments and strength strengthening posture through resistance training.
